The basics: Six cards into the set and we're already on our second Reds card. Card companies had been featuring Dan Wilson on cards for two full years before his star-rookie status with Upper Deck in '93. In 1991 alone he had five different major-issue cards, plus a few minor league cards.
Card thoughts: I associate Dan Wilson with the Mariners, so it seems strange to see him in red, even though there are plenty of cards with him with Cincinnati.
Backs are important in '93 UD: Wilson never got a chance to demonstrate that he could hit with the Reds as he was traded to the Mariners after just 48 games. But he did hit 18 homers during his lone All-Star season, with Seattle in 1996. Also, he's one of those catchers in the '90s that has his share of excellent cards.
More from '93: This week in 1993, Bill Clinton was officially sworn into office as the 42nd president of the United States.
I only remember Wilson from his time with the Mariners and these days... every time I see one of his cards I think of Daniel the blogger who shares his last name.
ReplyDeleteIt is a bit odd to see him in Cincinnati red. Good photo though.
ReplyDeleteIMO, the best catcher the Mariners have had. Also, one of my biggest PCs. Love Dan The Man!
ReplyDeleteThe trade ended up good for both teams. Wilson, along with Bobby Ayala, were major contributors to Seattle's success in the 90s. In return, the Reds got Bret Boone and Erik Hanson, both member of the 1995 Central division champions.
