13 - JIM TATUM, STAR ROOKIE

The basics: Jim Tatum debuted as a Major League player on a lot of cards in 1993, but only two of them show him as a Brewer, this card and the '93 Donruss card. Tatum was chosen by the Rockies in the expansion draft and we will come across another Tatum card in this set, much, much later, as a Rockie.

Card thoughts: Tatum looks quite intense staring out from the dugout. I'm guessing he's getting ready to bat and studying the pitcher.

Backs are important in '93 UD: Ah, Upper Deck was already aware of Tatum's move to Colorado. Just couldn't obtain that photo in time, I guess. The bio gets Rockies fans' hopes up at the end there, but Tatum's best season with Colorado was in 1993 when he hit one home run and batted .204 in 92 games.

More from '93: Duran Duran's seventh album, self-titled, was released on this date in 1993. It marked the group's return to popularity, with a more grown-up sound, after several years of disinterest. "Ordinary World," and one of my favorites, "Come Undone" were released off the album.

  1. I always thought he looked like Dave Hollins on this card. Looking at it now... not so much.

  2. Never heard of Tatum... but both of those Duran Duran songs are awesome.

  3. The "Wedding Album" was definitely my first real experience with Duran, though I was familiar with their early '80s hits. It was definitely a 'where have these guys been?' feeling for me.

Kinda funny how Tatum's card expects big things from him with Colorado. And why wouldn't they? Thin air, more playing time... plus it looks like he was familiar with playing in Denver. I still smirked at the text knowing he never panned out.
