15 - STEVE HOSEY, STAR ROOKIE

The basics: Baseball cards had been heralding Steve Hosey's arrival since 1990. He was in Upper Deck's Top Prospect portion of the 1992 set and on Bowman cards from 1990-93. The photo used for his 1991 Bowman shot is almost identical to his 1990 Bowman card.

Card thoughts: Look at those shoulders, what size sport coat does Hosey wear? I also like how he's kicking up grass and dirt on his way up the first base line. It doesn't look like it, but he's really moving.

Backs are important in '93 UD: Upper Deck has got to stop pinning all of its hopes on rookies. Now it has Hosey replacing Kevin Mitchell. Steve Hosey was traded by the Giants after the 1993 season to the Angels. He didn't show up in the majors again after '93. After his career, Hosey enjoyed success in the real estate business and has been a community leader in his hometown of Fresno.

More from '93: The No. 1 alternative rock song on the charts on this date in 1993 was "The Devil You Know" by Jesus Jones. It was No. 1 for four weeks, but I barely remember this song.

Comments

  1. Steve Hosey is why I'm always leery of Giants draft picks now. Get burned a exactly the right age as a child and here's no repairing the damage.

  2. I don't remember that song, but I vaguely remember Hosey. Just bought an old issue of Baseball Cards that contained a card of his.

  3. Topps and Panini seem to be doing the same thing now that UD was doing back in '93, i.e. pinning their hopes on the rookies.
