22 - BILLY ASHLEY, STAR ROOKIE

The basics: Billy Ashley's first cards in major league major releases showed up in 1992 in Bowman and in the Donruss The Rookies set. In 1993, he charged out of the box with appearances in at least eight sets plus a couple of inserts.

Card thoughts: Probably the most interesting card in the Star Rookie subset just from a "what's this?" aspect. Why did they shove Eric Karros into Ashley's shot? Also those shadows give the picture a DIY feel. The patch on Ashley's sleeve is to recognize the 30th anniversary of Dodger Stadium.

Backs are important in '93 UD: This is getting to be a pattern, Upper Deck's writers did not hold back in hyping these prospects. The bio hooks Ashley up with Frank Howard, Jose Canseco and Karros in a mere six sentences. Ashley tried to live up to the hype after spending all but six at-bats in the minors in 1994, but three years with the Dodgers (1995-97) produced 23 home runs, and not much else, in 223 games.

More from '93: On this date in 1993, ABC moved the starting time for the half-hour news show, "Nightline" from 11:30 p.m. to 11:35 p.m. This was an attempt to attract more affiliates to pick up the show at ABC and gear up for the anticipated late-night competition, that it already faced with NBC's Tonight Show, when David Letterman would move to CBS for his own show later in the year. Nightline is still around, but it airs at 12:35 a.m.
