27 - DAVE NIED, STAR ROOKIE

The basics: David Nied appeared on quite a few cards as a Braves prospect in 1992. But in '93 he was a brand-new Colorado Rockie after being the No. 1 overall pick in the expansion draft.

Card thoughts: I am assuming that this photo was taken after Nied was named the top pick in the 1992 draft. I'm pretty sure I watched this, but don't remember much about it. ... Upper Deck calls him "Dave," but most other cards call him "David." Also, let's see if this is the only time a player wearing a tie shows up in 1993 Upper Deck.

Backs are important in '93 UD: Interesting that the Marlins would have made Nied their first pick, too, if they had the chance to pick first. Nied grabbed everyone's interest with his 1992 performance for the Braves in the final month of the season. Nied didn't pitch that well in the majors ever again though he started 38 games over 1993 and 1994. He was out of MLB after six games in 1996. Nied has said post-career that his fastball and slider just weren't good enough against major league hitters.

More from '93: Since I'm writing about the 1993 expansion teams, let's see how they were fairing on this date in 1993, which was a Sunday:

The Rockies gave up the most runs it would allow all season in a 19-9 loss to the Montreal Expos at Mile High Stadium. They dropped to 2-3 on the season. The Expos' Mike Lansing went 5-for-7 in the game.

The Marlins lost to the Padres, 6-2, at Joe Robbie Stadium. Starter Jack Armstrong gave up three runs in the first inning on three singles and a double by Derek Bell. The Marlins fell to 2-4.

Comments

  1. Although I do remember Nied primarily for being the first pick in the expansion draft... the other memory I have of him is being part of the 1992 Leaf Gold Rookies set when he was with the Braves.

  2. I always hated cards that featured photos from draft night.
