The basics: This card is Dale Murphy's only card as a Phillie in the 1993 Upper Deck set. His base card in the set is way up in the "high numbers" of the second series, as a Colorado Rockie.
Card thoughts: Murphy always looks odd to me as a Phillies player. This might be the strangest because of so much red. Meanwhile, a photo of a player signing for fans is always a winner, plus you get the bonus of checking out the fans in the stands, including a little kid with a very large "P" on his hat -- is he on someone's shoulders? -- and either a shaggy haired woman or maybe it's Jani Lee of Warrant.
Backs are important in '93 UD: Dale Murphy was a slam-dunk for this subset. His charity contributions were well-known during his playing career. The Sports Illustrated issue referenced in the write-up was published on Dec. 21, 1987 and titled "Athletes Who Care." It was the Sportsperson of the Year issue and all eight were named sportsmen/women of the year. ... Also I like the line about how Murphy should be honorary chairman of honorary chairmen.
More from '93: On this date in 1993, top-ranked tennis star Monica Seles was stabbed in the back on the court by a self-described fan of Steffi Graf in Hamburg, Germany.
Seeing Murphy in a Phillies uniform is like seeing Will Clark in a Rangers uniform. As for him being with Colorado... I don't even remember that. But I definitely remember the attack on Seles. Very scary and sad day in sports.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember him ever being a Rockie either.
ReplyDeleteOut of curiosity I tried to figure out the text on the back. As far as I can tell it references David Cone, who was traded to the Blue Jays from the Mets in 1992.
