37 - NOLAN RYAN, COMMUNITY HEROES

The basics: This is Nolan Ryan's first card in this set, he'll appear twice more. He's also in a number of inserts, like many of the star players in this set.

Card thoughts: I am not a fan of curtain backdrops on baseball cards. The best backdrop in the world is a baseball field, get Ryan to just stand there on a ballfield!

Backs are important in '93 UD: That's a lot of charity organizations, although I wouldn't call youth baseball "mundane." The Cowboy Crisis Fund, now named the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund, is still in operation. I couldn't find anything about Athletes Through with Chew still existing.

More from '93: On this date in 1993, the Toronto Blue Jays mascot, B.J. Birdie, is ejected from a game against the Twins by umpire Jim McKean after making offensive gestures, according to McKean.

Comments

  1. BJ Birdie was trying to rally tge crowd to boo McKean after a trap looked like it might be ruled a catch.
Funny thing of course McKean is Canadian

  2. Totally agree about studio portraits on cards. Hate them.

    1. I caught that too. Can't imagine there are a lot of baseball cards with the word "mundane" on it.

  4. So, he was a hard-ass on the field, but a big ol' softie off of it.
