The basics: From left to right, that's Paul Molitor, Pat Listach and Robin Yount. Take a guess: which player appears the most times in the 1993 Upper Deck set? Yup, it's Listach. He appears four times and the two Hall of Famers, Molitor and Yount, appear three and two times, respectively.
Card thoughts: All right, I think those three guys are actually there in County Stadium, the Brewers' home at the time. The background is interesting as the fans seem to be in on the photo, like they're part of a sitcom audience. Check out the guy standing in the University of Miami T-shirt, plus a random Pirates fan.
Backs are important in '93 UD: Pat Listach was a sensation at the time as the AL Rookie of the Year in 1992. But he fell off quite a bit in 1993 and was done in the majors by 1998. The 1992 Brewers stole 256 bases and hit 82 home runs, a far cry from the Brew Crew I grew up with in the late '70s/early '80s. For example, in 1980, the Brewers stole 131 bases and hit 203 home runs.
More from '93: On this date in 1993, President Clinton nominated Ruth Bader Ginsburg to the Supreme Court.
Sad the trio only played together one season. The window might have been open for a short time... but I remember treasuring Listach's 1992 Fleer Ultra rookie card.
ReplyDeleteI always wonder if any of the people that you can clearly see (like the kid in the Pirates hat) on cards like this, know that there's a card out there on which they appeared.
