The basics: Cecil Fielder makes his first of three appearances in the 1993 Upper Deck set while Mickey Tettleton makes his first of two. The question here is "where is Rob Deer?" Deer tied Tettleton for second place on the Tigers in homers in 1992, both three behind Fielder's 35.
Card thoughts: I am hoping that Fielder and Tettleton are really at a car salvage yard. Even if it's a stock background, it gets the "mashing" point across, especially with the two each equipped with mashers. I like how both are wearing uniform-numbered wrist bands.
Backs are important in '93 UD: The Rangers duo referenced is Juan Gonzalez and Dean Palmer. Gonzalez led the AL in home runs in 1992 with 42. Palmer had 26. So they just nosed out Fielder and Tettleton (or Fielder and Deer) by one home run, 68-67.
More from '93: On this date 30 years ago, Moises Alou, Marquis Grissom and Larry Walker hit back-to-back-to-back home runs as the Expos beat the Pirates 9-2 in Montreal.
1992 was almost like 1968 all over again. Certainly a long year for fans of offense! These unique logos on the teammates cards are amazing.
ReplyDeleteThat is weird that UD left Deer out of this photo after mentioning him on the card back and tying Tettleton. Regardless... the background choice is excellent.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my favorite cards in the set.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see Cecil smashing a car with a baseball bat, to be honest.
ReplyDeleteCecil looks like a guy who was not used to having his picture taken, which is kind of weird given how many times he had probably had his picture taken by that point.
