49 - BASH BROTHERS, TEAMMATES

The basics: This is Mark McGwire's second appearance in the 1993 Upper Deck set and it's even more odd than the first one, back at card no. 41. This is Ruben Sierra's first appearance and it's odd as well.

Card thoughts: This might be the most awkward-looking card in the set. Sierra and McGwire do not look like they are in the same photo together. They look like they're dressed for different types of weather. I wonder if Sierra was photoshopped over Jose Canseco.

Backs are important in '93 UD: The trade that sent Canseco to Texas and brought Sierra to Oakland also included Jeff Russell and Bobby Witt going to the A's. Sierra did all right for Oakland but it was nothing like his Texas days and certainly didn't match Canseco's time with the A's.

More from '93: On this date in 1993, the Rangers' Juan Gonzalez won the Home Run Derby the night before the All-Star Game at Camden Yards in Baltimore. But the most famous shot at the derby that day was Ken Griffey Jr.'s blow off the B&O Warehouse building beyond right field.

Comments

  1. Sierra looks like he was photographed in a studio, given the lighting. And I think you are 100% right, with the name of the card he was pasted in over Canseco.

  2. For some reason I almost want to say they took a night photo of Sierra and shopped him into this card.

  3. I always thought the Sierra photo was taken at night too. No batting helmet which is another sign the picture was altered.

  4. I feel like I've commented on this card before. It's definitely weird.

  5. It's not great, but I feel like a couple of the extreme close-ups that you've already shown were worse photo-wise.
