51 - SOUTHSIDE SLUGGERS, TEAMMATES

The basics: Robin Ventura and Frank Thomas are each making their first appearances in the '93 Upper Deck set. In fact, this is the first White Sox card in the set. Both players will show up twice more in the main portion of the set.

Card thoughts: Frank Thomas looks young ... Obviously the fans in the background are not watching these guys bat in different directions. Kind of an odd look.

Backs are important in '93 UD: The White Sox would reach their peak in 1993 with both Thomas and Ventura enjoying terrific seasons and Chicago capturing the AL West. The black-and-white White Sox hat was everywhere. I even had one. Chicago was headed in a similar direction in 1994 but the strike took care of that and also took the steam out of the White Sox's run, although they were decent all through the '90s.

More from '93: The Tears For Fears song "Break It Down Again" was No. 1 on the alternative charts on this date in 1993. Tears For Fears is still going, they released an album last year.

  1. My kids have been watching old Psych episodes and recently watched the one with Chris Smith. Greatness. About once a year I get The Hurting out and play it. Again, greatness.

  2. I really thought that White Sox team was going to break through- until McDowell left, and Fisk retired, and then Cleveland pushed them aside.

Though I was well aware of The Cure, Duran Duran, and New Order's '90s hits I had no idea that Tears For Fears had one.

  3. Too bad that UD didn't plan ahead and just get a photo of them posing like this before a game. The card would've looked a lot better if they had.

  4. A. Now that I've seen this photo of Thomas and Ventura... there's little doubt that the McGwire/Sierra card is photoshopped.

    B. Elemental was the last Tears for Fears album I ever bought. Good to hear that they are still producing music. I definitely love the stuff they put out in the 80's.
