The basics: Wally Joyner, George Brett and Gregg Jefferies are each showing up for the first time in this set. It's also the first Royals card in the set. Jefferies will get two more cards, with different teams. Joyner and Brett will get one more. Brett's next card is coming up very soon.
Card thoughts: I do not associate Joyner and Jefferies with the Royals at all. In fact, they shouldn't even be buddying up to a Royals legend like Brett. Where is Frank White or Freddie Patek? ... Also, it looks like Joyner recently caught an errant throw with his bare hand.
Backs are important in '93 UD: This card was already out of date when it was issued and so was the last sentence in the write-up. Gregg Jefferies was traded to the Cardinals in February 1993 so the family didn't stay together beyond '92. ... The line about Brett putting the 'hit' back into designated hitter is probably not a slam on the previous Royals DH but a reference to Brett's subpar 1991 season as he DH'd for K.C. in '91, too.
More from '93: On this date 30 years ago, Mets pitcher Bret Saberhagen admits to spraying bleach into a group of reporters after denying his involvement for two weeks.
Ugh, I forgot about Saberhagen's frat-bro behavior. Then again... early '90s Mets.
ReplyDeleteAnd that trade was a real blessing to Jefferies, as he would go on to have what were arguably the best two seasons of his career in St. Louis.
ReplyDeleteFirst time hearing about Saberhagen's bleach spraying incident. That's not very cool. And I don't associate Joyner or Jefferies with the Royals either. Joyner will always be an Angel... and Jefferies a Met.
