The basics: This is the first of two Mike Maddux cards in the 1993 Upper Deck set. He'll appear later in his updated uniform. He was traded to the Mets in mid-December 1992. This is also the first Padres card in the set.
Card thoughts: It sort of looks like Maddux is throwing a knuckleball. I don't know if he threw a knuckleball but you can have a look yourself.
Backs are important in '93 UD: We get a nice wingspan view of Maddux's delivery. The current pitching coach for the Texas Rangers (his second time as Texas' pitching coach), Maddux bounced from team to team from 1986 all the way to 2000. The seven games he won in 1991 was his personal high. So were the five saves he collected in 1991, 1992 and 1993.
More from '93: The 10th MTV Music Video Awards took place on this date 30 years ago. Pearl Jam, for the video "Jeremy," and En Vogue, for the video "Free Your Mind," were the top winners. Performers included Madonna, REM, Lenny Kravitz, Soul Asylum, Aerosmith, Sting, Naughty By Nature and Janet Jackson.
Maddux threw a knuckle curve, which has a similar grip.
ReplyDeleteI can't remember what age I finally did, but I'm very glad that I grew out of the MTV award shows kind of early on.
