64 - DOUG DASCENZO, CUBS, OF

The basics: This is the first of two Doug Dascenzo cards in the set -- what a world, two Doug Dascenzos in one set. He was signed by the Rangers in December 1992.

Card thoughts: The first of the Ivy Background cards in this set. Upper Deck is the only '93 set to show Dascenzo fielding as most of the other card photos that year are typical bunting or base-running shots.

Backs are important in '93 UD: Staying in Wrigley for the back. Those stats are Dascenzo's entire Cubs career. He'd play for Texas in 1993, then struggled, playing in the minors in '94 and '95, before a final 21 games with the Padres in 1996.

More from '93: On this date in 1993, AL owners approved the sale of the Baltimore Orioles to Peter Angelos. That went well.

Comments

  1. Two cards fro Dascenzo sounded odd to me and made me wonder if maybe he was good for a year and I just forgot. Nope--the card back says it all.

  2. He might not have had a stellar career... but his name is kind of unique... which is why I remember it. I guess it might also have to do with all of those Junk Wax Era packs I opened.

  3. His '92 numbers weren't bad, and did appear that he was improving with more playing time. It's not hard to see why Texas would've wanted to take a chance on him. Nice looking card, too.

  4. Cubs' fan favorite, well known for his pitching appearances in blowouts; even appeared pitching on a couple of cards.

  5. Definitely a Cubs fan favorite. In my neighborhood you could always trade Dascenzo cards as if he was a star.
