71 - ANTHONY YOUNG, METS, P

The basics: Not only is this Anthony Young's only horizontal card from 1993 but I believe it's the only horizontal card of him during his career, at least for the major card companies.

Card thoughts: I've said this many times but I love the 3D vibe of a player overlapping the letters on a card. It's part of the charm of this set (and especially in 1988 Topps).

Also, even someone challenged at identifying stadiums on baseball card like me knows that Young is pitching in Wrigley Field.

Finally, I don't know what my photo scanner did with the shadows on Young's left leg, they look like he spilled something on his pants.

Backs are important in '93 UD: More Wrigley! Young indeed converted 12 straight save opportunities in 1992. He was also in the midst of setting an all-time record for most consecutive losses, which lasted from May 6, 1992 to July 24, 1993. Young's 0-27 mark has not been broken. Young was at 14 straight losses when this card went to print.

Also, this is the second card in the last six featuring a player who has passed away. 1993 doesn't seem nearly that long ago for that to be happening.

More from '93: The last surviving member the St. Louis Cardinals' famed "Gas House Gang" team of 1934, Burgess Whitehead, died on this date in 1993 at age 83.

  1. Wrigley shots for the eventual Cubs pitcher.

  2. You're right, 1993 wasn't long enough ago for guys in their prime at that time to have passed before 2024.

  3. Wow, as a Mets fan, I'm ashamed that I didn't know Mr. Young passed back in 2017. b-r also says he's the 16,000th player in major league history.
