The basics: This is the second-and-last Chuck Finley card in the set, coming 24 cards after him sharing space with teammates Mark Langston and Jim Abbott. This is also the seventh pitcher card in the last eight cards of the set.
Card thoughts: Super-tight shot of Finley in action on the mound. Kind of a precursor to those 2012-15 Topps card photos.
Backs are important in '93 UD: Finley looks like he's posing for a magazine shoot. Those baseballs seem artfully positioned off to the side.
1992 was a down year for Finley after his 1989-91 run. He'd bounce back a bit in 1993, leading the league with 13 complete games.
More from '93: Back in 1993 all the biggest bowl games still took place on January 1. Results were:
Rose Bowl: Michigan 38, Washington 31
Sugar Bowl: Alabama (#2) 34, Miami (#1) 13
Orange Bowl: Florida State 27, Nebraska 14
Cotton Bowl: Notre Dame 28, Texas A&M 3
Fiesta Bowl: Syracuse 26, Colorado 22
Whenever I see Chuck Finley, it reminds me of the Seinfeld Episode in which Tawny Kitaen, (Chuck's eventual wife), caused Jerry to play chess... against himself... in a manner of speaking.
ReplyDeleteI remember Finley being an all-star... but didn't realize he had such a great run from 1989 to 1991. 52-27 record with a 2.93 ERA... 20 complete games... and 5 shutouts. Pretty impressive.
ReplyDeleteWasn't he married to someone of note? Don't answer that, I'll look it up myself.
