The basics: This is Bob Walk's only card in the '93 Upper Deck set and it's a pretty good one, but it doesn't top his Donruss card from the same year. There can't be a lot of times Donruss beat Upper Deck in '93.
Card thoughts: I mentioned most of them up above, the only thing left is: no wonder pitchers can't last three years without undergoing elbow surgery.
Backs are important in '93 UD: Walk pitched his most games in relief in 1992 since 1986 and 1987. He was entering his final season in the majors, but in 1993 all 32 of his games were starts. He'd tie his career high for wins in a season (13), set his career high for losses (14) and lead the league in earned runs allowed.
More from '93: Famed jazz musician Dizzy Gillespie died on this date in 1993. He was the last of the original "be-bop" musicians, which included Charlie Parker and Thelonius Monk, to pass.
The Donruss card is pretty darn awesome.
ReplyDeleteEver since I encountered the(now dormant) blog that bears his name I've had a new appreciation for Bob Walk and his cardboard. I've even looked into picking up his Starting Lineup figure (but it's expensive!)
ReplyDeleteI like the image on the back better than the front. Either way... the Donruss card trumps this one.
ReplyDeleteNo comment from Matt? Hopefully he at least saw it on the Twitter.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing as Jon!
