85 - MARK GUBICZA, ROYALS, P

The basics: Mark Gubicza gets a card after yet another injury-plagued season for the Royals. He'd enter the 1993 season in the starting rotation but get moved to the bullpen due to ineffectiveness. 1993 would be his only season where the majority of his appearances were in relief.

Card thoughts: I love mound meeting cards. They always feature some intrigue: "why are they meeting?", "is the pitcher in trouble?", "are they trying to get together on signals?", "are they discussing women in the stands?" Also, you get the catcher in the shot, too. That's Brett Mayne, whose own '93 UD card isn't until #604.

Backs are important in '93 UD: A nice action shot to complement the front photo. You can see Gubicza's 20-win season just making the cut in Upper Deck's truncated stats (Gubicza's first season in the majors was 1984).

More from '93: On this date in 1993, Dale Jarrett won the Daytona 500 for the first time (he'd win twice more), edging Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon for the victory.

  1. I wonder if there are any famous batterymates known for discussing women in the stands. I know that kind of stuff happens. Two of my co-workers went to Spring Training years ago... and a player sent someone from the dugout into the stands to give them his number.
