The basics: This is Mark Leiter's lone card in the 1993 Upper Deck set. His appearance in sets in '93 was somewhat spotty, showing mostly in all-inclusive products, like Topps, UD and Fleer.
Card thoughts: Goodness, what did Mark Leiter think of this photo selection? Is he simply overheated or did he just get taken out after surrendering 7 hits and 6 runs in two-thirds of an inning? Interestingly, this is the photo used on his baseball-reference page.
Backs are important in '93 UD: There's the action shot. The write-up mentions Leiter's ability to start or relieve. By the mid-1990s, he was strictly a starter, with the Giants and then the Phillies.
More from '93: The No. 1 movie in the U.S. this week in 1993 was "Cop and a Half," staring Burt Reynolds, and Norman D. Golden II as the child actor. It received generally poor reviews.
Never saw or even heard of Cop and a Half... and don't think I'm familiar with this card of Leiter. That portrait photo is pretty memorable. As for the player... I mainly remember him for having two versions of his 1988 Topps rookie card.
ReplyDeleteThat 1988 card is not Mark Leiter, it's his brother, Al Leiter. ... Coincidentally, on the same day I wrote this post, I watched Mark Leiter's kid pitch for the Cubs.
DeleteConsidering how many great photos have appeared so far, this one is surprisingly not very good.
