99 - MARK PORTUGAL, ASTROS, P

The basics: After no Astros cards for the first 96 cards in the set, this is the second Astros card in the past three cards.

Card thoughts: Mark Portugal appears to be signing someone's glove but not before putting the pen cap in his mouth -- do you know where that fan's pen has been?!?

Also, I have long loved this card because of the jacket Portugal is wearing, with the exception of the Astros logo, is exactly like a jacket I had during the early-to-mid 1980s. No, I was never an Astros fan.

Backs are important in '93 UD: Portugal was producing his greatest season when this card was released. He would go 18-4 for the Astros in 1993 and finish sixth in the Cy Young Award voting for the National League.

More from '93: This week in 1993, Janet Jackson's "That's The Way Love Goes" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 14.

    1. Agreed. Familiar with this one as it is a card from my frankenset. If you look closely, you can see a bulge in his right cheek from the sucker.

  2. Portugal had a fair amount of goofy-looking cards.

  3. Lol. If I was that fan, I would have let Portugal keep the pen. Students borrow pens/pencils from my classroom community cup and every now and then I see them put it in their mouth. Sometimes their friends notice and say something. Other times... they're just oblivious.
