108 - LANCE BLANKENSHIP, ATHLETICS, 2B

The basics: Lance Blankenship played in 123 games in 1992 -- the only time in his career he played in more than 100 -- and he appeared in just about every 1993 card set as a result.

Card thoughts: I didn't scan this card right, so the cropping is way off, this card isn't that off-center.

There are a lot of turning-two Blankenship shots in 1993. He could be turning two here but there is nobody sliding in so there's not much action. The name line almost covers up that Blankenship is tagging second with his foot.

Backs are important in '93 UD: A nice shot of Blankenship making the turn toward home, not seen on a lot on cards. ... "Lance Blankenship" is quite the regal name.

More from '93: On this date in 1993, the Mets lost to the Expos, 6-3. Anthony Young took the loss to go to 0-9. It was also his 23rd consecutive loss, tying the record set by Cliff Curtis in 1910-11. Young would go on to break the record and finish with 27 straight losses, which is still a record.

Comments

  1. Young going 3-30 over the two year period is mind-blowing. Not that W-L are the end-all/be-all of stats, but still...

  2. I remember that losing streak for Young. Felt bad he got all of that media coverage. Kinda like how I felt when Chris Davis struggled a few years ago.
