112 - BIP ROBERTS, REDS, IF

The basics: This is Bip Roberts' only card in the 1993 Upper Deck set. It's also one of the few '93 cards that shows Roberts in the field (Bowman and the Topps Black Gold are the only others I could find).

Card thoughts: Roberts appears to be racing for a short pop-up in Wrigley Field. Roberts played pretty much equally between second and third base in 1992, I'm not sure where he is here.

Also, if you have ever been "bipped," as I have, it's usually not with his '93 Upper Deck card, it's probably something Donruss-ish.

Backs are important in '93 UD: Roberts looks so young here. ... His first season with the Reds was a big success. He was among the top base-stealers and was elected to his only All-Star Game.

More from '93: The American League beat the National League 9-3 on this date in 1993, at Camden Yards in Baltimore. Kirby Puckett, Roberto Alomar and Gary Sheffield hit home runs, but the game is probably most remembered for John Kruk's reaction after Randy Johnson sent a fastball over his head. Kruk bailed out of the batter's box on the next two pitches from Johnson.

  1. I'm very happy to report that I've never been "Bipped", and hopefully never will be.

  2. You don't read too many traditional "Bippings" posts anymore.
