The basics: This is Craig Biggio's first card in the '93 Upper Deck set. He has another one later with a couple of his teammates. Also, this is the eighth straight card showing the player fielding. There hasn't been a card with a player hitting since No. 104.
Card thoughts: It was a big deal to get a photo of Biggio fielding at second in 1993 as he famously moved from catcher to second base for the 1992 season. Among other card companies that showed Biggio in the infield in '93 are Topps, Donruss, Fleer, O-Pee-Chee, Stadium Club, Select, Ultra, Flair, SP, Finest and Classic.
Backs are important in '93 UD: More infield fielding! ... Biggio set several career highs in 1992 and played in all 162 games for the first time in his career (he'd do it two more times). In 1993, he'd hit 21 home runs, a career-high at the time.
More from '93: I referred to this once before on the blog, but on this date in 1993, the Mets' Vince Coleman threw a cherry bomb firecracker into a crowd at Dodger Stadium, injuring three children.
Yep, I remember this being a big deal at the time because of his move to second. Great card.
ReplyDeleteI always liked Coleman, but that has definitely changed after reading about the firecracker story.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize that this blog was already over a year old. It doesn't seem like it's been around for that long.
