115 - EDDIE MURRAY, METS, 1B

The basics: This is the first of two cards in the '93 Upper Deck set that feature Eddie Murray. He'll show up on a combo card later. It's also the ninth straight fielding shot in the set.

Card thoughts: Wow, there is a lot I don't know about what's happening in this photo. My best guess is that Murray is trying to flag down an errant pick-off throw from the pitcher while the Cubs runner tries to get back to the base.

I do know that the first base coach is Jose Martinez, who was an infielder for the Pirates in the early '70s. Also, Murray is wearing a patch on his sleeve that all the Mets wore in 1992 in memory of William Shea, who had passed. Shea was key in bringing the Mets to New York and the namesake for Shea Stadium. He died in October 1991.

Backs are important in '93 UD: Murray is displaying the famed flexible bat shot in the photo. ... 1992 was Murray's first year with the Mets after signing as a free agent in November 1991. He tied a career-high in doubles in '92 with 37.

More from '93: On this date in 1993, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was born.

  1. Looks to me to very likely be Jose Vizcaino in the 1st inning of this game! Error charged to Murray, he'd come around to score an Unearned Run.

    1. Looks that way, though the error was charged to the pitcher, Dwight Gooden.

  2. Thanks to gcrl... I'm way more aware of memorial patches appearances on cards. My eyes were drawn to it on this card. Had no idea it was in honor of Shea though. Thank you for that piece of trivia.

  3. I had no idea that he was even ever a Met.
