116 - MATT NOKES, YANKEES, C

The basics: The sole Matt Nokes card in the '93 Upper Deck set is also the first card of the past 10 to show a player hitting instead of fielding.

Card thoughts: I'd wager there are not many cards showing a major leaguer hitting a ball off a tee.

I've had this card probably since 1993 and it's the first time I'm noticing the tee ball shadow on Nokes' leg. Also, who is that very official looking gentleman in the background and the half of a video cameraman to the left?

Backs are important in '93 UD: 1992 would be the last season that Nokes played in at least 100 games. Also his .224 batting average was the lowest since he played 19 games for the Giants in 1985.

More from '93: The crime thriller "Rising Sun," starring Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes, was the top movie at the box office this week in 1993.

  1. The very official looking gentleman is probably an stadium usher - looks like a picture at Anaheim Stadium.

  2. A. A lot going on in that photo. Personally... it's a little too much. But when you consider that this set arguably has the best photography of the decade (maybe all-time), I'll give it a pass.

    B. Never knew that Nokes was a Giant. Kinda crazy since there's a chance I watched him play that season.

  3. Nokes was a bright spot on some bad Yankees teams.

  4. Another guy (along with Wally Joyner) who always killed me on Hardball 4. Not sure why but he would almost always homer off me.

  5. I wonder now if there are even any more cards of MLBer's hitting off of a tee?
