122 - WALT WEISS, ATHLETICS, SS

The basics: This is the first of two Walt Weiss cards in the 1993 Upper Deck set. He was traded from the A's to the Marlins in November of 1992 and shows up later in the set with the brand-new Marlins.

Card thoughts: Nice action shot, though Weiss won't be able to get the base-runner out. I think the sliding player is Ruben Sierra of the Rangers, going by the "2" on the uniform number and the "S" to start the name on the back. Not 100 percent sure though, so take a crack, I ain't got the time.

Backs are important in '93 UD: That's Weiss' entire major league career to that point in the stats. You can see the slow decline from his Rookie of the Year line in 1988 (not that it was the most exceptional year).

More from '93: On this date in 1993, the Astros' Darryl Kile threw a no-hitter against the Mets. Butch Huskey made his MLB debut in the game.

Comments

  1. I never understood why Weiss won the ROY Award (and I'm an A's fan). Based on the voting... the AL definitely had a weaker pool of candidates compared to the NL that year.

  2. He had some really great cards during the early 90's, including one of the very best of the decade in his offering from '91 Topps.
