125 - ROBERTO ALOMAR, BLUE JAYS, 2B

The basics: This is the second of three Roberto Alomar cards in the set. He appeared back on card #42 with Joe Carter and then shows up much later in the team checklist paintings. This is also the first Blue Jays card since that combo card at No. 42.

Card thoughts: That's one hell of a tight action shot. I have no idea how Upper Deck acquired its action photography in the early '90s but this seems very professional.

Backs are important in '93 UD: Alomar did very well in his first year with the Blue Jays and performed even better in 1992. This was the start of the peak period of Alomar's career.

The back photo is a reminder of Alomar's odd habit of using baseball socks as a headband. Maybe my first indication that he wasn't all there.

More from '93: On this date in 1993, Bo Jackson hit a three-run home run to help the White Sox beat the Mariners and clinch their first AL West title in 10 years.

  1. Baseball socks as a headband? Interesting habit :D

  2. I always wondered about that as a kid when I looked at this card. Why wouldn't you just use a real headband, lol?

  3. Had that card since '93 and never realized that was a sock.

  4. The back photo is much better. I've never heard of his sock headbands, but it seems like as good of a way as any to repurpose old socks.
