129 - JERRY BROWNE, ATHLETICS, IF

The basics: If you haven't noticed, this set is front-loaded with star players, which was a regular practice in the early 1990s. It's nice to have a role player show up once in awhile.

Also, I believe this is the first "IF" position designation in the set.

Card thoughts: Jerry Browne seems to be trying to avoid being hit by a throw as he is tagged on the foot by a Boston Red Sox player.

Backs are important in '93 UD: It's another head-first-slide-with-dirt-flying photo, much like the front of the Roberto Alomar card a few posts ago.

Browne's career was winding down around this point. He was a couple years removed from his peak with Cleveland when he posted some decent numbers, especially in 1989.

More from '93: On this date in 1993, the Sports Illustrated issue addressing Michael Jordan's shocking announcement that he was retiring from the NBA appeared with the single-word question "Why?" with a photo of Jordan walking away on the court. Jordan made his announcement Oct. 6.

  1. Not the most flattering photo of Browne... but it's pretty unique. The thing I remember him for is his 1988 Fleer error (photo of another guy) and corrected cards. I do remember him playing in Oakland for a couple of years, but not specific memories stand out at right now at 6 in the morning.

As for Jordan, I had to look up that 1993 SI cover. I don't remember seeing it back then... but I'd love to add it to my collection one day.
