136 - RICKEY HENDERSON, ATHLETICS, OF

The basics: We're on quite a run of superstars lately as Rickey Henderson immediately follows Roger Clemens who immediately followed Don Mattingly. This is Henderson's only card in the 1993 Upper Deck set, he does appear in a couple inserts.

Card thoughts: It's another head-first dive into the base with dirt a-flying, we've had a couple of these card photos lately on this blog. I appreciate the horizontal treatment.

You can't see Henderson's face in this photo. The image has an anonymous quality as if this could be anyone sliding into the base.

Backs are important in '93 UD: Henderson is doffing his cap to the fans, which was a common sight in the early 1990s. But this isn't after Henderson broke Lou Brock's career stolen-base mark, I don't think. That happened in 1991 and in Detroit.

Henderson was a little injury-plagued in 1992, spending time on the disabled list twice that season. In 1993, he'd be traded to the Blue Jays during the trade deadline and help lead Toronto to a World Series title that October.

More from '93: Today's date in 1993 -- 11/30/93 -- is the name of an official bootleg live album from Pearl Jam. Its full title is "11/30/93 - Las Vegas, Nevada" and the recording is from a gig on that date in Paradise, Nevada.

  1. Looks like you can watch the concert on YT. Pearl Jam was one of my favorite bands back in 1993. It's kinda cool that you can go and listen to them play live... exactly like they performed it back then.
