137 - DARREN DAULTON, PHILLIES, C

The basics: This is the first of FOUR cards of Darren Daulton in the 1993 Upper Deck set. The three to come all are part of separate subsets.

Card thoughts: Another interesting fielding shot in this set. Daulton, for who knows why, appears to be making a throw between third and second base. That seems wild but that is the outfield at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego behind the play.

Not sure of the Padres player, it could be Darrin Jackson? And it's very nice of UD to get the Padres logo in the background above the Padres player.

Also, this card is a little off-center, top to bottom, which I'm not used to seeing with Upper Deck cards.

Backs are important in '93 UD: Here Daulton flags down a loose ball at Wrigley Field. He sure is doing a lot of running around on this card.

The 1992 season was Daulton's big breakout year with personal highs in just about every category.

More from '93: On this date in 1993, Sports Illustrated's edition included a cover story titled: "Can the NFL be saved? 10 ways to revive a boring league". I don't remember the NFL being boring at the time. The Bills were in the Super Bowl just about every year so it had my attention.

  1. Interesting that his hair is either sweaty or full of gel and curly on the front, but dry and wavy on the back. Do I remember him as more of a hair gel guy?

  2. Presuming that was a image from the 1992 season, it looks like a game from July 9, 1992 - it appears the Padres baserunner was Fred McGriff, who was caught stealing in the bottom of the fourth inning 2B (C-1B-2B).
