The basics: Ozzie Smith appears for the first time in the 1993 Upper Deck set. He'll show up in the Teammates subset later on. There was a real run of Cardinals cards about 60 cards ago but this is the first Cardinal in the set since No. 84.
Card thoughts: A cameo appearance by the Dodgers' Eric Karros, who is retired at second base by the leaping Wizard at Dodger Stadium. Upper Deck knocked out the "E" in "DECK" but Ozzie's hat doesn't quite block the space where the 'E" would go.
Backs are important in '93 UD: The back photo is the polar opposite of the front photo. The front shows Ozzie in the field, wearing a road uniform with a blue belt and blue cap. The back shows him at bat in a home uni, with a red belt and red helmet.
Smith was in his final full season when this card was being pulled from packs. He did not reach 100 games a year after 1993, although he would have in '94 if not for the strike.
More from '93: Famed wrestler "Andre the Giant" died at age 46 on this date in 1993. I believe this was the first pro wrestler I ever knew.
What a great action shot! This is a perfect example of why I love this set. As for Andre... I remember reading about it in the newspaper. I wasn't following wrestling anymore by 1993... but I was still shocked and saddened by the news.
