The basics: This is the first of three cards of Felix Jose in the 1993 Upper Deck set. In the second two cards he's shown with his new team.
Card thoughts: Leaping-at-the-wall shots are the best. It's tough to tell whether Jose caught this ball. I'm kind of thinking he's watching it go over the wall. But perhaps Jose knocking out the "C" in Upper Deck means "Caught"!
Jose was in the middle of his most productive period in his career, a three-year run from 1991-93 in which he played in at least 130 games, had around 500 at-bats and hit close to .300. He disappeared from the majors after 1995 and then resurfaced five years later with the Yankees and then the Diamondbacks.
More from '93: One of the most memorable brawls in NBA history happened on this date in 1993. Twenty-one members of the Knicks and Suns were fined and three suspended. The brawl began when the Suns' Kevin Johnson set a physical screen on the Knicks' Doc Rivers, who chased down Johnson and the two got in a fight. Benches cleared, Knicks coach Pat Riley fell and tackled a player. Greg Anthony came off the bench in his street clothes and punched Johnson. He was suspended 5 games.
Don't remember the brawl but this card is a nice piece of nostalgia.
ReplyDeleteA. Love the leap at the wall photo!
ReplyDeleteB. Don't remember that brawl, but I just rewatched it on YT. Pretty nasty stuff.
