The basics: This is Terry Pendleton's only appearance in the 1993 Upper Deck set, though he shows up in a couple of inserts. Also, after a run of eight Braves through the first 100-plus cards in the set, this is the first Atlanta player featured in 54 cards.
Card thoughts: Not the clearest shot in comparison to '93 UD's other sharp photos. I thought it might have been my picture-taking, but I don't think it is.
The benches in the background give away that this is probably spring training.
Backs are important in '93 UD: Blurred ball action! Though no bendy bat.
Pendleton was voted MVP for the second time in his career in 1991. His 1992 season was just about as good, though he finished just 20th in MVP voting that year. 1992 was Pendleton's only All-Star year, which surprised me to find out.
More from '93: Rangers pitcher Jeff Bronkey made his major league debut on this date in 1993, pitching in relief in a 13-2 victory over the Brewers. Bronkey is the first major leaguer born in Afghanistan. He does not have any Upper Deck cards that I know of, but he appeared in Fleer's '93 Update set, as well as in 1994 Topps.
Yeah one MVP and one all-star appearance is wild.
ReplyDeleteI would have thought that him winning the MVP Award without making the all-star team was a very rare occurrence. But it's actually happened twelve times in MLB history (most recently in 2021: Bryce Harper).
