165 - TONY GWYNN, PADRES, OF

The basics: Tony Gwynn appears for the first time in the '93 UD set. He will show up again with his teammates later. He's also in a number of inserts for this set.

Card thoughts: Although Gwynn won five Gold Gloves in his career (his last in 1991), he was much more well-known as a hitter and it's unusual to see a fielding shot of him. In fact in 1993, for another card of Gwynn fielding, you have to go to his Kraft Singles card, in which he's throwing from the outfield.

Also, Gwynn is covering up the head of Smokey the Bear on a billboard ad.

Backs are important in '93 UD: Gwynn experienced yet another shortened season in 1992, spraining his knee in September and ending his year early. He'd bounce back nicely in 1993 and the four-year stretch between 1993-97 kind of solidified his Hall of Fame status, even though injuries continued to be a problem.

More from '93: "Bad Boys," a song by Jamaican band Inner Circle debuted in the top 40 this week in 1993. The song is probably known most for being the theme song to the show-that-will-never-end, "Cops"

  1. Fun card...front and back pictures not showing him doing that he's known for.

  2. A. Interesting slide form.

    B. I don't think I've watched that show since the 90's, but that song will live on forever in my head. Bad boys, bad boys... wha'cha gonna do?

  3. Seeing Gwynn fielding and sliding is a treat, but a lot of fans forget he was fast back in the day. I thought he had a 60-steal season but I just checked and he swiped "only" 56 bags in '87.
