166 - DEION SANDERS, BRAVES, OF

The basics: This is Deion Sanders' lone appearance in the 1993 Upper Deck set. He's a popular guy in UD's Fun Pack set of the same year, though, appearing at least three times.

Card thoughts: A classic batting cage shot, but Sanders has something in his mouth. Perhaps a toothpick?

Backs are important in '93 UD: Sorry, not a Braves fan, who is the on-deck hitter holding his bat with his crotch there in Wrigley Field?

1992 was Sanders' best season in the majors. He was still playing for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons, too, but led MLB in triples and played in a career-high 97 games. The highlight was his performance in the postseason, which was also marked by him famously pouring an ice bucket on broadcaster Tim McCarver during the NLCS postseason celebration.

More from '93: On this date in 1993, the New York Knicks advanced to the NBA Eastern Conference finals by beating the Charlotte Hornets 105-101 in Game 5 of the semifinal series. Charles Oakley had 21 points and 11 rebounds.

  1. Front - lollipop? Back - Lemke?

    1. Agree with Lemke for sure. On the front, it looks thicker than a toothpick, so lollipop would fit. Charles Oakley was a scary dude.

  2. That Knicks team was loaded. Oakley, Starks, Ewing, Mason, Smith, and Rivers are about as intimidating as you can get. As for Deion... I had to look up his baseball stats to refresh my memory on his career. Had no idea he played off and on into the early 2000's.

  3. The bulge in his cheek made me think lollipop as well.
