The basics: Mike Devereaux's lone card in the 1993 Upper Deck set. He is in one of the insert sets this year, Home Run Heroes. Devereaux reached 20-plus home runs for the first-and-only time in his career in 1992.
Card thoughts: This fine shot reminds me of some of the Stadium Club cards, both from the '90s and the more recent iteration. Love that the ball is in the shot.
The Angels catcher appears to be Lance Parrish, who wore No. 13 with California and played in just 24 games for the team in 1992. He is wearing the memorial initials for coach Deron Johnson on his sleeve. Again, I don't know the Oriole leading off third in the distance. Hoiles? Orsulak? If this was a scene from the '70s I bet I'd have it down.
Backs are important in '93 UD: Another spring training shot. ... Devereaux set personal highs in many categories in 1992 -- hits, doubles, triples, home runs, RBIs -- and appeared in more games than in any other year of his career. He finished seventh in AL MVP voting, the only time he received MVP votes.
More from '93: Two movies debuted at the top two spots in the box office rankings this week in 1993. "Sliver," featuring early 1990s "it girl," Sharon Stone, was No. 1, and the Charlie Sheen sequel spoof "Hot Shots, Part Deux" was No. 2. The sequel spoofed the Rambo movies, primarily.
The Orioles and Angels only played twice that year while Parrish was catching. There were three times Devereaux came to bat with a guy on third. Two times it was Billy Ripken, the other time Leo Gomez. Most likely that runner is Ripken.
ReplyDeleteA. Another solid action shot.
ReplyDeleteB. Pretty sure I saw Sliver in the theaters. Can't remember anything about it other than it featured Stone.
