The basics: Ron Darling shows up for the only time in the 1993 Upper Deck set. Darling spent the last five seasons of his career with the Athletics, which always surprises me. It's weird to see him in an A's uniform.
Card thoughts: Interesting photo with no real clue what he's doing. Is he snagging a low throw from a fielder while covering first base and then looking toward home and the runner at third? That's a shot in the dark. Like no context at all with this picture.
Backs are important in '93 UD: Darling had his best season in 1992 since at least 1989 with the Mets. And as odd as it looks to see Darling in an A's uniform, there are plenty of cards of him with the A's. Are there any with him as an Expo?
More from '93: On this date in 1993, Dale Murphy announced his retirement after a couple of months as a backup for the expansion Colorado Rockies. He famously stepped away two home runs short of 400 for his career.
TCDB shows no cards of his time in Montreal.
ReplyDeleteI got to meet Darling years ago when I was making trips to Spring Training. Nice guy.
ReplyDeleteRegardless of context, that's a nice looking card.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting photo on the front. Definitely unique. Reminds me of the 71T Brooks Robinson WS card... but obviously they play two different positions.
ReplyDeleteIt's about time Murphy got the hall of fame nod.
