The basics: Doug Jones shows up for the only time in the 1993 Upper Deck set. Certainly his most distinctive card of 1993.
Card thoughts: Perhaps a card that could only exist in the '90s. Camcorders were the No. 1 way to chronicle your kid's birthday party during that decade through the turn of the century. Here, Jones is capturing a scene at a ballpark, perhaps St. Louis or Cincinnati? I don't know. The model Jones is using is a Minolta Master.
Backs are important in '93 UD: The 1992 season was the most active of Jones' career. He set career highs in wins (11), innings (111.2), appearances (80) and strikeouts (93). His ERA of 1.85 was a career low and he led the league in games finished with 70.
Jones spent 16 seasons in the majors and is always special to me as he spent most of 1987 in Buffalo, which is when I was especially aware of the Bisons. They were in their final year of playing in The Rockpile, War Memorial Stadium, before moving to the downtown stadium where the Triple A team still plays.
More from '93: On this date in 1993, the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Los Angeles Kings 4-1 in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, clinching their 24th championship, which is still their most recent one.
Boy, those Astros players and their high tech equipment, huh? ;)
ReplyDeleteMy best guess is that he is at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego filming All-Star game workout - he was an All-Star in 1992.
ReplyDeleteI agree - San Diego. I didn't think of the All Star Game, good idea
Delete1993 was the last time any Canadian team won the Stanley Cup. The Habs won 10 consecutive overtime games those playoffs!
ReplyDeleteA. Doug Jones reminds me of Kenny Powers from HBO's Eastbound & Down.
ReplyDeleteB. Pretty crazy that it's been thirty-plus years since the Canadiens have won a title... and they still have eleven more than the second closest team.
