172 - DAN WALTERS, PADRES, C

The basics: Dan Walters makes his first-and-only appearance in the 1993 Upper Deck set. In fact, this is his only Upper Deck card.

Card thoughts: That's a nice "waiting for my turn" shot. He has all the gear going on there doesn't he? Helmet, bat, donut, gloves, wrist bands, shin guard.

Backs are important in '93 UD: "The Padres catcher of the future." ... Well, Walters was finished with the Padres by the end of 1993 and the catching position continued to be a string of short-timers for the Padres until Nick Hundley in 2008.

Walters' career ended in 1996 after suffering a severe spinal cord injury while diving for a ball during spring training. Two years later he became a police officer. In 2003 he was shot in the neck and then hit by a car while during a struggle with a suspect during a domestic dispute. He was paralyzed from the neck down and eventually died from his injuries in 2020 at age 53.

More from '93: The highest debuting song on the Billboard Top 40 this week in 1993 was Taylor Dayne's remake of the Barry White song, "Can't Get Enough of Your Love". It debuted at No. 27.
