The basics: Ryne Sandberg shows up for the second time in the '93 Upper Deck set. He first appeared in the Community Heroes subset. He'll show up again with some of his teammates later.
Card thoughts: Cool shot of Sandberg leaping for a liner in Wrigley Field. I'm going to guess that he actually caught the ball, though you can't see it in his glove. Either that or he caught the "E" in "Upper" of "Upper Deck".
Backs are important in '93 UD: The 1992 season was the last of Sandberg's big seasons in his major league career. It was his last silver-slugger year and the last year for which he received MVP votes. His Gold Glove run had ended the year before. 1993 would be an injury-plagued season and he'd actually retire in 1994 before returning for two more seasons in '96 and '97.
More from '93: The legal thriller, "The Firm" was the No. 1 movie in the U.S. on this date. It starred Tom Cruise, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, Holly Hunter, Hal Holbrook and Gary Busey. That's quite a lineup.
That's a great card. I'm guessing it's one of Ryno's best action photos.
ReplyDeleteWasn't Wilford Brimley in The Firm, too? I don't remember much about that movie so I could be wrong.
Indeed he was.
