185 - TONY PEÑA, RED SOX, C

The basics: The second of two Tony Peña cards in the '93 Upper Deck set. His first was back at card No. 33.

Card thoughts: Peña looks like a man on fire as he blazes head-first into third base, helmet flying off, during a game against the Yankees in Yankee Stadium.

Peña has plenty of cards in 1993 sets, but in typical Upper Deck fashion this is the only one of him on the base paths.

Backs are important in '93 UD: There's Peña in catcher's gear -- UD probably didn't want to put a catcher shot on the front because they used one with his first card in the set.

Also, for the second time Peña is displaying the "JRY" memorial to Jean Yawkey, who oversaw ownership of the Red Sox after the passing of her husband Tom Yawkey. Jean Yawkey died in '92.

Peña was entering his final season with the Red Sox when this card came out. He'd go through a down year in '93 and was signed as a free agent by Cleveland for the 1994 season.

More from '93: Speaking of catchers in the Red Sox organization, Seby Zavala was born on this date in 1993. Zavala, formerly with the White Sox, Mariners and Diamondbacks, plays for Triple A Worcester.

  1. That is a fantastic shot! I would never have guessed he stole 80 bases in his career...
