The basics: Rene Gonzales shows up for his lone appearance in the 1993 Upper Deck set.
Card thoughts: Gonzales is taking a lead off second, I'm assuming. Couldn't tell you who the infielder is, or even which team. Looks sort of like a Blue Jay.
Gonzales is displaying the initials of Deron Johnson on his right sleeve. Johnson, the former player and coach, was a hitting coach in the Angels organization during the late '80s and early '90s and died from lung cancer in April of 1992.
Gonzales had the most productive season of his career in 1992 with the Angels, and his time with the Angels in '92 and '93 in general was his most active. Gonzales was a utility infielder for seven different teams in his MLB career.
More from '93: The REM song "Everybody Hurts" made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 89 this week in 1993.
