194 - OMAR OLIVARES, CARDINALS, P

The basics: Omar Olivares makes a lone, memorable appearance in the 1993 Upper Deck set.

Card thoughts: Quite the capture as Olivares -- a pitcher -- is shown batting and in the act of throwing his bat at the ball, perhaps in a bid to protect the runner who is advancing on the play.

Olivares' helmet looks a little too big for him.

Backs are important in '93 UD: More batting from Olivares! This time on the road.

As the write-up says, Olivares was known to be a good-hitting pitcher who was used periodically as a pinch-hitter. He batted .235 overall in 1992. He would hit even better in 1993, at .269, but in fewer at-bats as he was mostly a reliever in '93.

More from '93: The movie "The Nightmare Before Christmas" opened in limited release on this date in 1993. It would be released across the country on Oct. 29.

  1. A. Cool to see a pitcher get two batting photos on a card.

    B. My teacher buddies are dressing up as characters from The Nightmare Before Christmas. I was designated "Barrel". Haven't started working on my costume. Not sure I will.
