The basics: Just the second White Sox card, in the traditional sense, to appear in the 1993 Upper Deck set.
Card thoughts: Ron Karkovice has a surprising number of interesting cards in 1993. Catchers naturally produce entertaining cards, but Karkovice also has a few out-of-the-box ones, including this that pairs two favorite card-collector actions -- talking on the phone and sipping a drink -- in one card.
I'm guessing Karkovice is answering a call from the dugout while in the bullpen.
Karkovice enjoyed his most productive year to date in 1992. He set even more career highs in 1993, appearing in a career-best 138 games.
More from '93: Notable movies to debut this week in the U.S. include the aforementioned "Three Musketeers" at No. 1, followed by "Carlito's Way", "Ernest Rides Again" and "The Piano".

The 10 stolen bases is surprising.
ReplyDeleteAnother great photo. Although it doesn't do Mr. Karkovice any justice. Assuming the birthdate is correct on this card, he was less than 30 years old when the the photographer took this photo. Guy looks like a seasoned manager in his 40's or 50's.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that I looked at his stats before but I guess I thought he was a better hitter. I always knew he was a very good fielder and a starter for several teams for a number of years but seeing the numbers on this card was a bit of a surprise.
