The basics: Mariano Duncan's lone appearance in the 1993 Upper Deck set. Duncan played in a career-high 142 games in 1992 and as a result set personal highs in several categories. ... Also this is the first Phillie to appear in the set in nearly 50 cards.
Card thoughts: This is the second straight card featuring a Cubs cameo. I think, though not positive, that this is Luis Salazar being retired by Duncan in Wrigley Field.
Backs are important in '93 UD: Duncan has moved to Dodger Stadium where he is forcing out former teammate Mike Scioscia.
Duncan's 40 doubles in 1992 was second in the National League behind the Pirates' Andy Van Slyke, who had 45 (In an interesting note, while doing research on this post, I discovered the 1993 Select NL doubles leaders card does not feature Van Slyke's photo as one of the three leaders on the front. Duncan is shown first. That made me believe Score/Select didn't have rights to Van Slyke, but he does have his own card in the Select set that year).
More from '93: Former Vikings/Bills/Texans and current Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs was born on this date in 1993.
