The basics: Mike Perez shows up on a pretty memorable card after finishing sixth in the National League Rookie of the Year voting in 1992.
Card thoughts: A mind-bending Inception-like card in which Perez appears to be holding the very card that he is on. This confused me for years. I think that Perez was holding another card (perhaps an older one of him) and Upper Deck pasted the '93 image on top of it in a pre-photoshop kind of way.
Backs are important in '93 UD: That is some interesting leg positioning in his wind-up. Perez enjoyed two exceptional seasons in 1992 and 1993 and a fairly good one in 1994 and then never reached that level again.
More from '93: The Nirvana Unplugged appearance on MTV aired for the first time on this date in 1993.

I like it, but it breaks my brain, so I don't like it at the same time.
ReplyDeleteUpper deck used a lot of early computer manipulation in their photos in the early 90s. This is one of the great examples.
ReplyDeleteYears ago, I used this card as an entry for a blogger contest. It remains one of the best stories I think I ever wrote: https://diamond-jesters.blogspot.com/2019/07/the-absolutely-true-story-of-mike-perez.html
