The basics: The first of two Charlie Hough cards in the 1993 Upper Deck set. His next appearance will be with the expansion Florida Marlins. A veteran of 22 MLB seasons at this point, he was signed by the Marlins as a free agent in December 1992.
Card thoughts: Hough is wearing a hat with the Chicago American Giants logo. The Americans were a Negro League powerhouse that existed from the 1910s into the 1930s. In 1992, the White Sox were one of the first major league teams to hold a Negro League reunion of former players.
Backs are important in '93 UD: Hough is displaying that knuckleball finish to his delivery. Also, Chevron logo sighting!
Hough spent just two seasons with the White Sox. As a '70s kid and a Dodger fan I wish Hough could have stayed with the Dodgers longer and be remembered with that team more than he is (Upper Deck's meager 5 years of stats doesn't even touch his Dodgers tenure). But I'm also glad he lasted so long in the majors.
More from '93: On this date in 1993, the Yankees introduced three new players to their team in a press conference in Jim Abbott, Paul O'Neill and Spike Owen.

If any modern player looks like he belongs in a uniform from the early 1900's, it's Hough...
ReplyDeleteAnother fine example of an attractive 1993 UD baseball card. Love both of the photos used on this card. I don't think I'll ever have the opportunity to meet Mr. Hough in person, but if I did... I'd bring this card along and ask for his signature.
ReplyDeleteO'Neill-for-Kelly turned out to be a great trade for the Yankees.
