The basics: Here is a nice final tribute card for Gary Carter. His final season was in 1992 when he returned to the team that he started with, the Expos. He appeared in 95 games that year and was granted free agency at the end of the season.
Card thoughts: What more could you want for your final card as a big-league catcher? Not only is Carter holding the ball aloft triumphantly in a cloud of dust but it kind of looks like he has punched the runner in the face in the process and knocked out the second P in "Upper Deck."
If I've deduced this correctly, this is a play during a game between the Expos and Giants on July 9, 1992 at Candlestick Park. In the bottom of the first, the Giants scored four runs, with the final two coming off a double by Jose Uribe. But the fifth potential run was cut down at the plate. The runner in the photo is Kirt Manwaring, who was trying to score from first. The Giants won the game in 12 innings, 6-5.
Backs are important in '93 UD: This photo was taken shortly before the photo on the front and shows Carter making the tag on Manwaring (who looks like he's asleep) before turning to the umpire to show the ball.
More from '93: The "mockumentary" movie "CB4," starring Chris Rock debuts at No. 2 on the U.S. box office charts this week in 1993. The movie parodies gangsta rap.
