The basics: Jose Offerman was coming off his first full season in the major leagues when this card was issued. This is the first of his two cards in the '93 Upper Deck set.
Card thoughts: Offerman looks long and lean in this interesting shot of him running to backhand a ball (with a tobacco tin or something else in his back pocket). Offerman was definitely not known for his great fielding so it's also an interesting photo choice.
Backs are important in '93UD: Some nice action on the back. Offerman appears to have made it to the base safely. I'm not entirely sure of the Met in the photo but I'm taking an educated guess that it's Dick Schofield, who had the majority of the shortstop time for the Mets in 1992.
If that's accurate, then it's his only appearance as a Met in this set, as he shows up as a Blue Jay on his own card.
The write-up begins with "Though he had his share of problems in the field ..." That's for sure! Offerman committed 42 errors in 1992, which was the most for a Dodger shortstop since Pee Wee Reese had 47 in 1941. The write-up also references Offerman's eight triples in 1992, which was the most for a Dodger since 1978, when Steve Garvey hit nine triples.
More from '93: This week in 1993, the baseball movie "The Sandlot" debuted at No. 2 at the box office behind "Indecent Proposal," which debuted at No. 1.
