229 - BUD BLACK, GIANTS, P

The basics: Bud Black had completed his second season with the San Francisco Giants when this card was issued. He compiled a 10-12 mark in 1992 after leading the league in losses (16) in 1991.

Card thoughts: Kind of an unusual horizontal perspective of a pitcher's wind-up but it does emphasize Black's high leg kick.

Backs are important in '93 UD: There's that throwback Giants uniform, likely from 1939, that's popped up on more Giants cards than not in this set. This is at least the second one of those that shows bunting on the walls, indicating that maybe they wore these during a home opener? I'm sure someone will correct me if not.

Black was nearing the end of his 14-year playing career at this point. 1992 would be his last season of at least 20 games pitched. He'd go on to be a well-known manager for the Padres and Rockies. A former pitcher as a major league manager may seem unusual but it's somewhat common, Black, Bob Lemon and John Farrell are notable examples, and, of course, Tom Lasorda.

More from '93: The movie "Sidekicks," starring Chuck Norris, shot up to No. 2 in the box office this week in 1992. It was a comedy-action-drama about martial arts, daydreaming and standing up to bullies. Critics didn't like it, but Danica McKellar and Richard Moll are in the movie so it's not all bad.
